Who can use the University Library Mainz?
The University Library Mainz is open to all interested persons.
You will need a library card if you wish to borrow or reserve books or request books on inter-library loan.
The conditions for obtaining a library card are that the user lives in Germany and is at least 18 years old. 16-18 year olds can also have a library card issued to them provided their parent or guardian gives their consent.
Registration is not necessary if you just want to view literature within the library.
Literature from the non open-access areas (repository) can also be requested for use in the reading rooms without a library card. To do this, please speak to the staff in the general information area. You can receive the literature requested by presenting your identity card or passport to the staff in the reading room information area.
How do I obtain a library card?
Students don't need to apply for a library card. Your data will be automatically transferred from the student administration to us.
Johannes Gutenberg-University staff, non-members of the university and 16-18 year-olds need to fill out the online application (German version). The data saved are subject to data protection.
Once registered, you can pick up your card from the lending desk at the Central Library, the Departmental Library for Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry or the Departmental Library for the University Medical Centre.
In order to pick up your card, you will need to present the following:
- Students of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz: a valid student ID and a valid photo ID
- Staff at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz: a valid photo ID and work contract, or current listing in the course catalog or staff list
- Non-members of the university: a valid identity card or passport and a residence certificate
- 16-18 year olds: a valid identity card or passport, together with a residence certificate and an informal declaration of consent from the parent or guardian
The library card also functions as a "Studicard" (combined library card and Studicard). This card operates as a debit card and, in addition to being used as a library card for borrowing purposes, can also be used for payment in the cafeterias and for cashless payment for photocopying within the university and printing in the ZDV and the library area. The combined Studicard is issued for a card fee of 5 €.
Non-members of the university pay an additional fee of 15 € per year.
Important: Old library cards (those that only have a library function) do not have to be replaced as they will remain valid. You can find more information on adding money to the Studicard or the combined library card here (German version)
I have forgotten my password.
Your default password is your date of birth in the format DDMMYY (example: 1/1/88 -> 010188).
If you forget your password, you can obtain a new one.
Please come in person to the lending desk and bring a valid photo ID.
I have lost my library card.
If your card is lost or stolen, you must report this to us immediately. Tel.: 06131/39-22213.
In such instances, we will block your user account so that no one can borrow from the library on your account. There is a charge of 5 € for issuing a replacement card.
In addition, we have to charge a card usage fee of 5 € for the combined Studicard / library card.
I have moved. How do I register my new address?
Students don't need to inform us of changes to their address as their data will be transferred automatically from the student administration to us.
All other users need to inform us of any change to their address promptly, so that they will receive all correspondence sent by us.
Please speak in person to the staff at the lending desk at the Central Library, the Departmental Library for Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry or the Departmental Library for the University Medical Centre and present a valid identity card or passport with a certificate of registration.
You can check whether your address is up to date by viewing your user account. You can also enter or update your E-Mail address. However, you cannot make any other changes yourself.
I have finished my studies. I need proof of discharge.
For graduation purposes, you will need proof of discharge from the University Library confirming that you have returned all books and that you do not have any outstanding fees.
This confirmation can be issued at the lending desk at the Central Library, the Departmental Library for Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry or the Departmental Library for the University Medical Centre.
